In 1879, Thomas Burberry invented gabardine - the most innovative weatherproof material of its time. It was a lightweight and breathable waterproof solution for Britain’s harsh weather. The material was patented in 1888. In 1893, Norwegian explorer Dr. Fridtjof Nansen took gabardine on his expedition to the Arctic Circle.

In 1913, Burberry moved to Haymarket London and that was the beginning of one of the most iconic fashion brands in history.
